Working with Behavior Design, Wondertwin was asked to create a new, engaging online experience for National Geographic Channel. As a companion to the popular television channel specializing in non-fiction programming, the website had to retain the authoritative and knowledgeable voice of the National Geographic Channel brand while re-imagining what a online presence could be for broadcast channel. A “convergent” web experience emerged from the design process. The site retains the best aspects of the entertaining “laid back” television experience in combination with the user-driven “lean forward” web presence.
Additionally, we were tasked to motivate users of the website to become viewers who “tune-in” and to develop unique ways to encourage the loyal fan’s enthusiasm. Both tasks were addressed in the development of an interactive TV Schedule (Image 2). Users are encouraged to freely explore a pictorial four-week schedule using dragging and sliding. Die-hard fans locate specific shows or programming themes with drop-down menus, which highlight the respective content.
Fan excitement was cultivated with uniquely customized show sites which allowed users to sift through a plethora of photos, videos and interactive features (Image 3). Uniquely customized show sites, which allow users to easily navigate a plethora of photos, videos and interactive features, enthuse fans.
The National Geographic Channel Website has been warmly received with positive reviews from several design and interactive magazines and received a Gold Davey Award.
