Large and complicated projects need not to have large and complicated processes. Streamlining the project into clear and obtainable milestones keeps everyone happy. Format Studio contacted Wondertwin to lead the Visual Design of the Garden & Gun Website Redesign and keep the process happy.
Format and Wondertwin were tasked with transforming the Garden & Gun website into a lucrative platform for advertisers while maintaining the elegant and refined aesthetic of the magazine. Wondertwin consulted with Format Studio during the initial Strategy and Information Architecture (IA) phases to create a seamless flow into Visual Design. With strategy in place and majority of the IA completed Design began.
The design phase began with a moodboard exercise. Moodboards allow designers to establish multiple visual directions in a quick and efficient manner. General layout, type, color and design elements are explored in a collage format for the client to review. Leveraging Garden & Gun’s brand I developed 4 moodboards (Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 & Image 4) which retained the strong branded presence of the magazine combined with an integrated approach to advertising.
By beginning with moodboards and utilizing touchpoints from the magazine we were able to narrow our options and refine the design in a fraction of the normal timeframe. The design moved quickly from Moodboards through Look & Feel (the chosen aesthetic implemented on a select number of pages for further refinement) to Applied Look & Feel (a detail oriented exploration of every page in the IA). The streamlined approach worked and Wondertwin met the aggressive Design Schedule.
The success was evident as Garden & Gun reported their traffic tripling within the first few weeks after launch.
